Virginia’s case-status directory separates its court systems. The instructions below apply specifically to Arlington Circuit Court; a General District Court result should not be sent automatically to the Circuit copy desk. Once the court and case number are established, decide whether you need case information or an actual document.
| Request detail | Published rule | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal documents | Email [email protected] | State the case number, document and preferred delivery. |
| Ordinary copy | $0.50 per page | Clerk replies with the actual price; pay before delivery. |
| Certified copy | Additional $2 per certified copy | Request certification explicitly. Email delivery is offered for uncertified copies. |
| You are the criminal defendant | All fees waived for documents in your criminal case | Identify that relationship in the request. |
| Payment | In person or by mail; no online/phone payment | Follow the Clerk’s reply rather than attempting payment through an unrelated portal. |
Checked September 29, 2026 against Arlington copy instructions. In-person card payments carry the listed 4% convenience charge. The office aims to fulfill requests within two business days; volume can affect response time.
Ask for the dated judgment, sentencing order or other identified filing. If you only know a case number, explain the outcome you are trying to document so the requested item can be identified.
A receiving organization may need certification. Tell the clerk whether pickup or mail is required; do not assume an emailed ordinary copy meets that requirement.
Follow the clerk’s payment directions, retain the request reference and check the delivered document against the case number and requested filing.
Arlington warns that a file can include confidential or sealed material unavailable for public viewing or copying. Ask about access to the specific item rather than treating a visible docket as permission to receive everything in the file.
